CROWNS

DENTAL CROWNS

Dental crowns are an artificial restoration that fits over the whole structure of a prepared tooth or dental implant.

They are sometimes known as a ‘cap’ and can be used for both functional and aesthetic reasons.

  • A dental crown is suitable for any tooth that has been damaged or weakened by decay and provides extra support of the structure to the remaining tooth.

  • For example following Root Canal Treatment.

  • Crowns are also used to improve the appearance of a tooth and your overall smile.

  • Crowns are also suitable for replacing missing teeth using dental implants.

  • Covering a discoloured or misshapen tooth

  • Securing a dental bridge

Crowns are extremely strong and resemble the shape of a natural tooth, they are crafted by a technician in expert Dental Laboratory’s and can be made out of porcelain, ceramic or gold.

Once attached to the specially prepared tooth your crown can last for many years providing that you look after them!

Your Dentist will advise you on which will be the most suitable option for you and your tooth

Your dentist will consider the strength of crown & material, the wear it will be subject to, the aesthetics of the crown ( at the front of your mouth or hidden at the back) and also the functioning of the tooth and teeth involved, with the aim for your mouth and teeth to look and function as close to normal as possible with your new crown restoration in place.

Porcelain crowns are usually used for teeth near the front of your mouth, as the material looks similar to a natural tooth. These crowns are the most aesthetic and therefore used in areas of the mouth where the appearance is very important. Porcelain is also used when a patient has a metal allergy.

Zirconia is a strong white ceramic material and can be produced thinly, meaning more of your natural tooth structure can be saved. As zirconia can appear opaque, it’s mostly used for back teeth.

Porcelain is the preferred crown treatment for the majority of patients because the crowns are designed to mimic your natural tooth colour. However, porcelain crowns are not as durable as gold.

Porcelain Fused to Metal (PFM) crowns combine the durability of gold with the natural aesthetics of porcelain crowns.

The main benefit of Gold Crowns is their durability. Gold is the most durable , predictable and best tolerated of all the crown materials, it’s only issue may be the colour. Gold or any metal-based crowns are able to withstand large amounts of pressure from chewing.

Gold and metal crowns are also therefore very helpful for people who exhibit heavy wear patterns on their teeth.

Allergies to metal

One of the main side effects of gold or metal-based crowns is allergies. Some people have mild to severe metal allergies and it’s important that you inform your dentist if you suffer from a metal allergy before gold crowns are considered.

As you have read there are several options of different materials and matters of function & aesthetics for your Dentist to consider when making his recommendation for your crown.

As with all treatments there are more expensive and less expensive options.

The difference comes down to the materials used, the skill of the dental technician and time involved in making the crown and applying the necessary artistic touches and the skill and experience of your Dentist in carrying out such restorations.

Working with high end Dental Technicians and Dental Laboratories naturally means that fees will be higher and this will be factored into the price you pay.

However, with all these in place the restoration that results should be excellent, predictable and last as long as a crown could, with excellent fit meaning few problems are likely to result in the future.

Once fitted your crown will still require you to look after it and our Hygienist will work with you and your Dentist to help ensure that your tooth and gums stay healthy to keep your tooth and crown in place for years to come.

Regular Hygienist appointments and Routine Dental Examinations with your Dentist will help to detect any problems early and with good care your crown should provide many years of trouble free service!

Dental Crown Procedure typically happens over the course of two appointments with your Dentist.

  • The first being Crown Preparation where the tooth is prepared to accommodate the new crown and an impression will be taken, including the teeth above the crown, to ensure that the crown can fit correctly with your bite. The impression will be sent to the Dental Laboratory to create your new crown, this usually takes about 2 weeks.

  • At your second Crown Placement appointment your dentist will fit and fix your crown in place. Your Dentist will check the colour, shape, and fit of your new crown, and once satisfied, permanently cement it in place.

  • Maintenance

You will need to look after your new crown, clean around it correctly and attend regularly for professional cleaning with your Hygienist to help keep your gums healthy and to help prevent any problems in the future. With good care your new crown will last many years!
